ART ON WHEELS

What is Art On Wheels?

Background

Art on Wheels began as a way to address the lack of opportunity there is for underserved communities to engage in acts of self-expression, learn new skills, and discover hidden talent in the hopes of holistic and therapeutic benefits. From their observations, Art on Wheels identified key areas of focus: Aging in the Arts, Arts and Disability, and Healing in the Arts.  They developed a broad visual arts curriculum that provides a challenging yet adaptive program for people of all ages and abilities.

Mission

Art on Wheels enriches lives by sharing diverse artistic experiences in communities with limited access to the arts.

Community

Art on Wheels seeks to improve health and wellness in the elderly, disabled, and other communities that frequently lack easily-accessible artistic outlets. Art allows people to address physical and emotional challenges. There are general health benefits due to the research that indicates engaging in creative activities enhances the health of at-risk communities, potentially reducing the need for long-term care and saving resources. Art on Wheels travels to 20 locations across Virginia to best reach underprivileged communities. There is an added bonus beyond the art itself, as many participants benefit from meals, transportation, and exercise through Art on Wheel’s partnerships with other agencies, including assisted living facilities that offer comprehensive care.
