Dear Delegates, Sponsors, and other Attendees,
It is my honor to welcome you to FreeMUN V, the fifth iteration of the annual Model United Nations Conference hosted by students and staff at Freeman High School on December 13-14, 2024.
I first became a part of FreeMUN as a delegate in middle school, the year the conference was started, over Google Meets and Google Docs. Then as a student at Freeman, I became more involved through chairing and serving on the secretariat. Over the past five years, it has been a privilege to watch this conference grow from a small collection of zoom links to a cherished tradition of my school and the greater Richmond community.
This year, we are pleased to offer seven temporally and geographically diverse committees including a Committee on Iranian Affairs, the Brethren Court, and the Paraguayan War. A cardinal characteristic of Model UN is its ability to improve participants’ speaking, researching, and writing skills; we hope that our wide committee selection allows delegates to pursue what they are passionate about while attaining valuable lifelong skills.
Additionally, FreeMUN V’s partner charity is Art on Wheels. Art on Wheels is a Richmond-based nonprofit organization that brings participants empowering, creative, and artistic experiences as ways to cope with personal challenges and foster community connections, specifically in isolated, rural or under-served populations. In addition to art and music therapy, Art on Wheels also typically provides meals, transportation, exercise and other activities during programs. Delegates, we hope you take the time to support this wonderful organization by buying baked goods, t-shirts, candy grams, and more during the conference weekend.
Our charity goes hand-in-hand with this year’s conference theme, Tell Your Story. Oftentimes, we dim ourselves in the interest of societal conformation, whether that be at school or with our friends and even our family. Model UN gives us a chance to be brave and to be bold, to choose to think differently—authentically. Every year, FreeMUN delegates astound me with their commitment, intelligence, and compassion. I look forward to one last year of precious memories where students from across the county can come together and tell their stories.
Finally, I hope you all will take the time to be a part of a weekend that means so much to me and the rest of the FreeMUN staff and secretariat. We are so excited to make this conference just as important a tradition to all of you as it is to us. See you in December.
Sincerely,
Liah Chung
