The UN Human Rights Council convenes in 2023 to address mounting unrest in formerly colonized regions and the lasting effects of historic injustices. Its two primary topics, Reparations for Genocide and Colonialism and Establishing Global Standards for Future Atrocities, ask delegates to confront the moral, legal, and economic consequences of the past while preparing systems to prevent future harm. The first topic calls for reflection on whether former colonial powers should provide compensation for the damage their actions caused, while the second challenges nations to design universal guidelines for addressing crimes like genocide and ethnic cleansing. Delegates must balance justice, sovereignty, and fairness as they determine how the world should respond to both past and future human rights violations.
